Deep Rooted Longing

For you, I am a tree

Planted firmly to your forest ground

Though I desperately long to be free

The hope of us has kept me bound

Here I am rooted, stretched, cold, and exposed

My body has no cover and my heart is never closed

It seems that I am stuck here

Since I weathered many of your storms

And though it seems you will never fully dig me out to be with you

That truth has only made me grow some thorns

I am satiated by your short visits to my tree

And though they are brief

They kept me thinking that you need me

I will stay here through your hurricanes, your axings, and your fires

And even if all my branches and limbs get broken

I’ll be satisfied if those were your desires

I hope that you will one day see all that have endured for you

Years of torture and breaking would be worth it to mean something to you

At the end of it all, I am a stump that has forgotten the longing to depart

And, now, all I can hope for

Is that my stump has been uprooted to your heart
